Last year, House Bill 1141, which would expand access to medical aid in dying (MAID) in WA, failed in the legislature. We will be testifying about the importance of this legislation to our representatives in Olympia on Monday. Eastern Washington residents with terminal illnesses, such as my friend Jim, cannot access physicians in this region who are willing to prescribe medication used in MAID. Jim must see a physician in Western Washington to access MAID because of the requirement that prescribing providers must be physicians. The expansion of 1141 would allow other types of providers, such as nurse practitioners, to prescribe medication and increase access to MAID throughout all of Washington, including medically underserved rural areas.
Please comment on the bill here and ask your representative to vote yes on ESHB 1141.
